Manuscript Format Instructions for Papers submitted to “Taiwan Journal of Applied Economics”

Authors must submit their manuscripts in accordance with the requirements of this document, and only academic papers that meet the specifications will be considered for publication.

I.

The Journal accepts manuscripts in either English or Chinese. The order of the submitted papers is as follows: first page (author information), abstract page, main text, appendices, references, and last page (translation of the abstract page). To facilitate the review process, the author information of the manuscript is listed on the first page only, and the abstract page and text are anonymous.

II.

To submit a manuscript to the Journal in both English and Chinese (including preliminary and review manuscripts), please use the online submission and review system for the Taiwan Journal of Applied Economics (http://tjae.nchu.edu.tw/). The main text should be no less than 12,000 words but no more than 20,000 words. The English and Chinese abstracts should be 300 to 500 words.

III.

The first page of the manuscript should contain the title of the paper, the name of the author(s), the organization where they work, and other relevant author information. The second page is the abstract page (including the title of the paper, key words, and JEL classification codes). Authors of Chinese manuscripts are required to translate the Chinese abstract into English and attach it to the end of the article, which is the end    page. Authors of English articles should also translate the abstract into Chinese and attach it to the end of the article according to the aforementioned procedure.

IV.

Except for the first page and the abstract page, each page of the text should include consecutive Arabic numeric page numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) placed at the bottom center of each page. Chinese submissions should be written horizontally in 12-point Calibri font; English submissions should be written in 12-point Times New Roman font or other font with fixed proportions and spacing. There should be one line of spacing between each two lines of text on the page. The left and right margins of each page should be 2.5 cm, and the top and bottom margins should be 3 cm.

V.

Subsections - If there are many subsections in each section of the article, please mark them according to the following:

        1. English section:

            Ι. Major Heading (Full-block Form)

            A. Minor Heading (Full-block Form)

            a. Subheading (Full-block Form)

           (a) Subheading (Full-block Form)

VI. Mathematical formulae

  1. If there is a number, please place it on the right side of the equation, such as (1), (2), and so on.
  2. Mathematical equations in the appendix, if numbered, should be given as (A1), (A2), and so on.
  3. For independent mathematical equations, add a colon (:) at the end of the text before the mathematical equation, as far as possible, and do not punctuate the end of the mathematical equation; for example, a natural logarithmic wage equation can be expressed as follows:                                                                                                                                                                                                       lnWi aiYi biZi +ei                     (1)
  4. In Chinese numerical equations, the numerator and denominator are arranged horizontally, as much as possible, such as:  x = [y3/(cx2+5)].

VII. Footnotes

When using footnotes, please mark the Arabic numeric sequence of footnotes 1, 2, ... in the places where the footnotes are needed by superscript. For papers written in Chinese, the in-text marker is placed to the left of the period; for papers written in English, the marker is placed to the right of the period. Footnotes should be written in smaller font size (10pt) at the bottom of the same page.

Literature Citation

Cite the literature without adding textual explanations, and do not write the literature in the form of a note. Authors are listed directly in the text, and the year of publication is added in parentheses, or can be expressed in parentheses after the same sentence. The content includes the author and the year of publication, and the order of the cited literature is based on the “year of publication”. If multiple papers by the same author are cited in different years, simply list the author’s name once, and place the year of publication in the same parentheses. When multiple papers by the same author are cited in the same year, they are distinguished by lowercase letters, a, b, and c, after the year of publication. If more than three co-authors are cited, the first author should be the primary author, followed by “等” in Chinese and “et al.” in English. (In the case of two co-authors, the authors’ names should be linked by “與” in Chinese and “and” in English). The years in both Chinese and English are expressed according to the Western Calendar. Authors are separated from the year by a comma (,). If more than two citations are given in the same paragraph, each citation is separated by a semicolon (;). For example:

Hill and Stafford (1971), Barro (1973) and Becker (1974) mentioned...

(Hill and Stafford, 1971; Becker, 1974a, 1974b; Chang, 1982, 1983; Liao et al., 2010)

VIII. Tables & Figures

1.  Appendices should be placed after the text and before the references.

2. All figures and tables in the text portion should be numbered with Arabic numerals, and without brackets. For example, Figure 1, Table 2; Table 1, Figure 2.

3. The numbering of the appended figures should be in Arabic numerals, and expressed as Figure 1, Table 2; Table A1, Figure A2.

4. The title of the table is placed on the top of the table.

5. The title of the figure is placed at the bottom of the figure.

6. If the source of the figure/table is quoted from other sources, and is not the author’s creation, the source of the information must be indicated in the figure/table.

7. The source of the figure/table and the commentary are placed under the figure/table, in order.

8. Place the figure/table at the appropriate position after the text of the paragraph (if possible, place it on the next page alone if the space required is large).

9. The graphics in the text should be carefully compiled for direct page production.

IX. References

1. Chinese literature is placed in the front and marked with [I. Chinese part], while English literature is placed at the end and marked with [II. English part].

2. Chinese literature is sorted by the number of strokes of the first author's surname, then by the year of publication. Please use 「」 in the title quotation marks (except for book titles). The format of punctuation marks must be strictly observed. The month of publication is not required, and only the year of publication is required. The issue number need not be listed, but the volume number is required. Authors (society, seminar organizer or presenter, venue, and city) should be listed in the proceedings of any symposium. Reports on projects commissioned by governments or research institutions that are not widely distributed should include as much information as possible. In addition to the sponsor and the year of completion, the sponsor, co-sponsor, publisher, and city should be listed.

3. Provide also the English translations of the Chinese literature.

4. English literature is sorted alphabetically by the last name of the first author, then by the second letter of the last name. Please use quotation marks, “…”, for the title of the paper. Punctuation marks, case (prepositions, conjunctions, and titles that do not begin with the title of the paper, do not need to be capitalized), abbreviation and ordering of the author’s name, and the use of “and” must be strictly observed. Please note that the comma at the end of the title of the paper should be within the quotation marks. The comma can be omitted if it is a question mark. The names of journals and English books should be italicized. Only the number of volumes should be listed, so the number of issues can be omitted. The city and the full name of the publisher should be listed in detail.

5. If there are references from any website, include the date of search or access.

7. Notes for listing references: If multiple papers by the same author are cited at the same time, they should be listed in order of the year of publication, and the names of the authors should be repated, and not simplified as horizontal lines. If the same author collaborates with different persons as the first author on several papers, all the papers they have authored may be listed before the co-authored papers are listed, according to the surname of the second author.
